Ursula K. Le Guin & Todd Barton - Music and Poetry of the Kesh (2018)

Ursula K. Le Guin & Todd Barton
Music and Poetry of the Kesh
(1985, Reissue 2018)

Ursula K. Le Guin, the master writer who died in January at the age of 88, in her final months was preparing the re-release of a 1985 work that had largely flown under the radar. "Music and Poetry of the Kesh", her collaborative album with composer and analog synthesist Todd Barton, was first issued on cassette in 1985, bundled with Le Guin’s novel "Always Coming Home", a dark-horse favorite among her readers. It's an expansive, 523-page portrayal of a future tribe of indigenous people living an anti-colonial existence 500 years from now, their lives ruled by nature and the seasons, their story told by Le Guin in fiction, poetry, plays, recipes, ethnography, a glossary, and hand-drawn maps. Even given those wildly melding genres, Le Guin claimed she needed to "hear the music", too. She enlisted Barton and began an elaborate and carefully considered process that yielded the deceptively verisimilar "Music and Poetry of the Kesh".

Laurie Anderson & Kronos Quartet - Landfall (2018)

Laurie Anderson & Kronos Quartet
Landfall
(2018)

Over the years Laurie Anderson has benefited from many remarkable encounters and collaborations that have helped her career progress from strength to strength. First premiered live in 2013, "Landfall" is the first collaboration with the renowned Kronos Quartet, a string quartet famed for its constant pushing forward of musical boundaries. The record's narrative was inspired by the epic storm Sandy which was the deadliest and most destructive hurricane of the 2012 Atlantic hurricane season and Anderson’s experience with the storm. At the same time, it’s a lament and a wrath at the storm and the damage it has caused. At the time, when the storm hit NY it flooded parts of the city including Anderson’s Lower Manhattan basement that was full of old equipment, memorabilia, and stage props. "Landfall" is a beautiful and sublime work in both intent and depth of material. It uses seemingly simple, haunting sketches of instrumental poetry that explore a diverse palette of sounds and moods that gradually and minimally blossom both emotionally and harmonically over the course of 30 compositions. It’s also an ambitious work that unifies these two distinct and towering avant-garde institutions, classical and ambient elements, acoustic and electric instruments into a singular statement. These 30 emotionally mercurial vignettes draw from equally broad sources and as a result, the music they create draws both from classical and ambient music. There are moments where it’s neither of those by conventional definition, but it liberally blends the aesthetic choices from both. But together, the effect is both moody and evocative.

Anabollic Steroids - Carry On Stinking! (2018)

Anabollic Steroids
Carry On Stinking!
(2018)

Anabollic Steroids (deliberate misspelling) are a punk band who first appeared in 1978. By 1981 they had recorded their own material and become a genuine gigging band with a dedicated following of so called "Stinkers". They chalked up around twenty gigs before splitting early in 1983. Infamous for many reasons and legends in South London, their candle burned bright and fast, with band members all moving on to more "progressive" post punk acts. However, a reunion gig in 2012 unintentionally led to the band reforming and so, "Stink" continues into the 21st Century - it’s been 40 years since the dawn of what this bunch from Bromley call "Stink!" and to celebrate this, ahem, punk rock landmark they are releasing a CD and doing a gig.

The Radiators From Space - TV Tube Heart [40th Anniversary Edition] (2017)

The Radiators From Space
TV Tube Heart [40th Anniversary Edition]
(2017)

"Ireland's first punk rock band"

The Radiators were one of the first wave of bands who swept the UK and Europe with a revolutionary new sound. The LP (which came out 21 October 1977) leads with "Television Screen", a version slower than the single with a distinct T.Rex feel about it. This expanded version of the album is remastered from new transfers of the original tapes. Following the original 13 tracks are the "Live In The Studio" recordings, which feature some priceless commentary from the band as they ripped through their set. Next up are alternate versions of "Not Too Late" and "Blitzin' At The Ritz", previously only available on an Irish cassette compilation, and the "Live At The Vortex" recordings (Steve Pross recorded the band to cassette on 21 September 1977 on the band’s London debut). These tracks are rough, raw and very live, but a great document of the Irish outsiders' take of the London scene. This anniversary edition rounds off with three non-album 45 sides, including the coruscating single version of "Television Screen" - and 40 years later we still "don’t like what’s going down".
